Francis Mitty, who has been a clown his whole life, is unexpectedly fired after a botched birthday party, forcing him to obtain a 'real' job. Francis is hired in a dreary office as a filing assistant, and he is able to discover ways to use his talents as a former clown to befriend and help his co-workers: a young man who is in love with a fellow co-worker and a man who simply needs a few kind words. Throughout these encounters, Francis is able to once again find his place in life, until a stroke of oversight threatens to unravel everything he has worked so hard to accomplish.
