Marcy Stills, an art major suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder, has recently been unable to paint as her OCD has begun to manifest itself as a fear of liquids getting on her hands. Her twin brother, Andrew Stills, has served as her caretaker for their entire lives, but is now preparing to leave Marcy and go to grad school. With her brother leaving and her OCD getting increasingly worse, Marcy is more unsure than ever about her future. Into this chaos comes Amilia Marbleberry, Marcy's estranged best friend from middle school, who shows up on Marcy's doorstep wishing to repair their friendship. Marcy reluctantly plays the role of host to Amilia, who slowly reveals that she has many severe and unexpected problems of her own. As Amilia, Marcy, and Andrew spend a weekend together that travels from Marcy's college to their home town, their conflicts are brought to the forefront and they must each decide to create a new friendship or let their old one fade away.
